Carson Park

The touristic hub is a 134-acre peninsular playground west of downtown jutting into Half Moon Lake.

The primary attraction is the Chippewa Valley Museum (715/834-7871, www.cvmuseum.com, 10am-5pm Mon.-Sat. and 1pm-5pm Sun. summer, shorter hours otherwise, $5 adults) with award-winning displays on the valley’s Ojibwa culture. Of note are the 21-room dollhouse and an anachronistic ice cream parlor.

The Paul Bunyan Logging Camp (715/835-6200, www.paulbunyancamp.org, 10am-4:30pm daily Apr.-Oct., shorter hours otherwise, $5 adults), a replica of an 1890s camp, features an interpretive center with unusual and wonderful logging flotsam, including a mini-village of structures and Brobdingnagian heavy equipment.

The Chippewa Valley Railroad (www.chippewavalleyrailroad.com, noon-5pm Sun. Memorial Day-Labor Day, $3 adults, $2 children) offers rides on a half-mile 16-gauge line through the park. The two coal-fired steam engines pull all-wood 1880s passenger coaches, among other beauts, some the best of their kind in the state..
